Executive Director
COTA (NSW)

COTA (NSW) is delighted to be a part of the exciting opportunity of working with PLUS40. We believe in the PLUS40 concept and its potential contribution to the story of mature employment in Australia. Mature aged or experienced workers have a great deal to offer the Australian and world market. Their skills are often under valued. New approaches are needed to support job creation and placement for over four million workers in Australia.

COTA (NSW) [Council on the Ageing (NSW) Inc founded 1956], is a member of the COTA Over 50s Alliance, whose mission is the well-being and interests of all older Australians. COTA (NSW) has been active in pursuing employment initiatives on behalf of mature workers, since 1996 : national conferences (1999-2004), workshops (2003), the NSW Mature Employment Line – MEL 2005, and continuous social policy development and advocacy.

COTA (NSW) wishes to be an Alliance partner with PLUS40, and has introduced PLUS40 to the national COTA Over 50s Alliance. COTA (NSW) is seeking to establish a national mature employment telephone information and referral service in association with government, corporate sponsors, not-for-profit state agencies and PLUS40.

We have been waiting a long time for a dedicated website for the mature aged person – that is those born before 1965. They represent the babyboomers who have worn the particular brunt of a changing world.

Our interest is to develop the careers of mature aged people and we have a number of services that we have developed accordingly, however, we have never had the resources to pull off one of the greatest services for the mature age person, that is, a website totally dedicated to their needs.

I’m sure we all know someone who has either missed out on a job, or a promotion, because of their age or are struggling to get a job after becoming unemployed for any reason – because of that invisible use by date. So PLUS40 is a fantastic initiative to help people in every community surmount this challenge. As a Past President of the Rotary Club of Parramatta City, I recall the sort of challenge we faced with vocational service, but PLUS40 is a tangible program that every Rotary Club can get behind as part of their Vocation Service where they can provide real grass roots support to family, friends and colleagues in their own community.
